How much gravel do I need?
Gravel is typically sold by weight (tons) rather than volume, since different types of stone have different densities. A path or driveway base usually needs 2 to 4 inches of depth, while a decorative top layer can be as shallow as 1 to 2 inches.
Crushed stone and river rock are slightly denser than pea gravel, so the same volume of each will weigh a different amount — this calculator adjusts automatically based on which type you select.
For driveways, many contractors recommend a compacted base layer followed by a finer top layer, which you can calculate separately using this tool for each depth.
Frequently asked questions
A driveway base typically needs 4 to 6 inches of compacted gravel, sometimes followed by a thinner top layer of finer stone for a smoother finished surface.
