How much soil do I need?

Soil volume depends on the size of the area you're filling and how deep you need it. Raised beds typically need 8 to 12 inches of soil depth, while topping up an existing garden bed might only need 2 to 4 inches.

Different soil types have different densities — topsoil is generally heavier than a light, fluffy garden or raised bed mix, which affects the total weight (and sometimes delivery cost) even when the volume is the same.

For raised beds, measure the interior dimensions rather than the outer frame, since that's the actual space you'll be filling.

Frequently asked questions

Most raised beds do well with 8 to 12 inches of soil depth, which gives roots enough room while still allowing good drainage.
